Gold Leaf Repair To State Historial Capitol Building
Recently the crew has been regilding the 24k gold dome of the Colorado State Capitol Building. During the Summer of 2019, we sandblasted the domes’ copper ribs to bare metal and repainted them using a Fluorokem product from Sherwin Williams. This work was done because the original coatings applied by other contractors had failed entirely during the initial restoration in 2014. During the sandblasting in 2019, the gold-leafed roof was damaged in a few spots so we have been spending some time regilding the dome with Manetti Gold Leaf from Italy. Applying the thin gold leaf sheets to a dome 300′ in the air with no wind protection is a daunting task because the sheets of gold are lighter than air and can be blown with any gust of wind.
